Banish boring potted plants from your mind! If there's one plant that will transform your patio or conservatory into an exotic oasis of well-being, it's the White Ginger Lily (botanically Hedychium coronarium). This breathtaking plant combines a spectacular, tropical appearance with a floral scent so incredibly intoxicating with jasmine, vanilla, and a hint of fresh ginger that you won't want to spend mild summer evenings anywhere else.

Scope of delivery: Rhizome pieces in various sizes.

Origin & Diversity: A Scented Wonder with Many Names

Originally, this exotic plant comes from the mountainous regions of India, Nepal, and Southeast Asia. But its beauty and unparalleled aroma have literally conquered the whole world, which is why the White Ginger Lily is known today by many evocative names:

  • Butterfly Ginger / Butterfly Lily: The pure white flowers actually look as if countless delicate butterflies have settled at the end of the lush green stems.

  • Mariposa: In Cuba, the plant is so revered that it was even named the national flower under this name (Spanish for butterfly).

  • White Ginger Lily: An often-used name in horticulture that alludes to the elegant, lily-like flowers.

  • In Hawaii, on the other hand, the intensely fragrant blossoms are an absolute favorite for the famous flower leis.

Growth, Care & Wintering

The White Ginger Lily grows from a strong rhizome (a root tuber) and forms upright, reed-like shoots with large, elegant leaves that are somewhat reminiscent of canna or the classic cooking ginger.

  • Growth Height & Location: In a large pot or in a warm summer bed, this perennial quickly reaches an impressive height of 1.5 to 2 meters. It loves warmth, high humidity, and a sunny to semi-shady, sheltered spot.

  • Care: As a true tropical plant, it is hungry and thirsty! Keep the soil nice and moist in the summer months (it can even tolerate "wet feet" at the edge of a pond) and fertilize regularly so that the White Ginger Lily gathers enough strength for its gigantic inflorescences, which usually open from late summer.

  • Wintering: The plant is not winter-hardy in our latitudes. But don't worry, wintering is very simple: as soon as the foliage wilts in late autumn or the first frost threatens, cut the stems back to the ground. You can then either overwinter the rhizomes in their pot in a cool, frost-free room (approx. 10 °C) or dig out the rootstocks and store them dark and dry like dahlia tubers until the following spring.

Into the Kitchen – What to do with your harvest:

Even though the White Ginger Lily is almost exclusively known as a purely ornamental and fragrant plant in our country, it holds some culinary secrets in its Asian homeland! Unlike classic spice ginger, the focus here is not on the pungent root, but on the flowers and leaves:

  • The Edible Scent: The white butterfly blossoms are edible! You can use them as a breathtaking, sweet-tasting decoration for summer desserts or cakes.

  • The Most Natural Cooking Pouch in the World: The large, robust leaves are traditionally used in Southeast Asia to wrap fish, meat, or sticky rice and gently steam them. The leaf gives off a wonderfully mild, earthy-spicy aroma to the dishes.

  • Relaxing Flower Tea: A few fresh blossoms, steeped in hot water, make a wonderfully gentle, floral tea that is traditionally drunk for relaxation in the evening.

Turn your patio into a tropical scented garden! With the White Ginger Lily, you bring a low-maintenance, vigorous rarity into your home that attracts all eyes (and noses!) with its elegant appearance and breathtaking floral scent.
