The 'Marketer' cucumber is an excellent, heirloom slicing cucumber variety that has proven itself through its robustness and outstanding flavor. This open-pollinated outdoor cucumber produces slender, dark green, slightly bumpy fruits that grow to an average length of 20 to 25 cm. It stands out for its firm, crisp flesh, very small seed cavity, and a mild, sweet aroma completely free of bitterness. In the garden, it is a reliable, high-yielding plant that provides consistent harvests even in warmer conditions.

'Marketer' is a vigorous, climbing annual plant. It can be cultivated traditionally by letting it creep along the ground or trained upwards on a trellis or net to save space. Tying it up not only makes harvesting easier later on but also ensures leaves dry off, preventing fungal diseases like powdery mildew. The plant requires a full sun, sheltered, and very warm location. As a classic heavy feeder, it demands an extremely nutrient-rich, loose, and humus-rich soil (ideally generously prepared with mature compost before planting). Consistent water supply is crucial for fruit formation—water at the root zone to keep the leaves dry at all costs.

The first cucumbers can usually be harvested starting in July. It is advisable to cut the fruits continuously at a length of about 20 cm, as they are most aromatic at this stage. Regular picking is extremely important: it encourages the plant to tirelessly form new blossoms and fruits. If you let even one cucumber ripen on the plant for too long, it often stops further production entirely. Due to its mild, crisp character, 'Marketer' is the perfect base for fresh summer salads, as a snack, or for cold cucumber soups.

This proven variety originally comes from the USA, where it won the prestigious "All-America Selections" (AAS) award back in 1943. It was bred specifically for high heat tolerance, uniform shape, and massive yield, and has since established itself worldwide as one of the most reliable varieties for outdoor cultivation.
