Brussels sprout 'Sanda' (botanical name Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera) is an outstanding, time-tested, and open-pollinated variety that stands out particularly for its enormous frost hardiness and reliability. This variety produces vigorous, tall-growing plants that develop a multitude of dense, firm, medium-sized, dark green sprouts along the stem. Among vegetable gardeners, 'Sanda' is considered the absolute standard for winter harvesting, as the plants can easily remain in the bed for months, enriching the winter diet with valuable vitamins.

Growth habit, location, and care:
'Sanda' grows as a stately, upright plant that easily reaches heights of 80 to 100 centimeters. To withstand autumn and winter storms, a firm connection to the soil is extremely important – when planting, the earth around the root ball should be pressed down firmly (or lightly trodden). Later mounding of the stem with soil further increases stability. As a classic type of cabbage, Brussels sprouts are heavy feeders. They require a sunny to semi-shaded location with deep, calcareous, and very nutrient-rich, preferably heavy soil. A generous base fertilization with mature compost and horn shavings before planting forms the basis for a good harvest. To prevent pest infestation, covering with a fine-meshed insect protection net against cabbage white butterfly caterpillars and cabbage root flies is strongly recommended.

Harvest and use:
The harvest season begins in late autumn (usually starting in November) and can extend into March of the following year. Harvesting is done continuously from the bottom up by breaking the ripe sprouts off the stem or cutting them off with a sharp knife. The foliage at the top of the plant should always remain as frost protection. A crucial tip: Brussels sprout 'Sanda' should ideally only be harvested after the first frosts. Due to the exposure to cold, the plant converts stored starch into sugar. This causes the cabbage to lose its bitter note and develop a significantly milder, nuttier, and subtly sweet flavor. In the kitchen, it is extremely versatile – whether classically steamed as a side dish, in hearty casseroles, as a warming soup, or halved and roasted vigorously as oven vegetables.

Origin:
'Sanda' is a traditional European cultivar that has proven itself over decades in both professional cultivation and hobby gardens. As an open-pollinated line, it stands for original robustness and reliable yields, which makes it one of the most sought-after varieties for genuine winter self-sufficiency to this day.
