Growth & Appearance

  • Lifespan & Winter Hardiness: Biennial, herbaceous plant. It is absolutely frost-hardy. If it grows as a biennial, the flat leaf rosette overwinters easily outdoors in the first year.

  • Growth Height: A real giant in the herb garden! It grows strictly upright and reaches an impressive 1 to 2 meters in height.

  • Habit: Typical for Lamiaceae, it has square stems. The dark green leaves are deeply pinnate and hemp-like (hence the name).

  • Bloom: From July to September, it pushes out several small, pink to violet labiate flowers in the leaf axils, which are arranged in tiers on the stem.

Origin The plant originally comes from Asia (Siberia, China, Mongolia). However, because it is so undemanding, it has spread worldwide – especially in Central and South America, where the locals gave it its Spanish nickname "Marihuanilla" (little marijuana).

Ingredients & IMPORTANT WARNING! To clarify the most important thing right away: The plant contains absolutely no THC and does not fall under the Narcotics Act! It is 100% legal. Instead, it scores with a complex mix of secondary plant compounds. These primarily include the alkaloid leonurine, as well as stachydrine, leosibirin, diterpenes, valuable flavonoids (like rutin), tannins, and essential oils. * Explicit warning: Even though Marihuanilla has a long tradition in other cultures, we strictly advise against any intake, consumption, or medical self-treatment! The dosage and effects of the alkaloids are complex. The plant is sold here as a pure, fascinating ornamental and insect plant for the garden. Pregnant women in particular must not consume this plant under any circumstances, as the ingredients can have a strong labor-inducing effect!

Traditional Use (Historical & Worldwide)

  • In Far Eastern Herbal Medicine: In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the plant is known as "Yi Mu Cao" (translated: "Mother's Healing Herb") and has been used there for millennia for menstrual problems, to promote blood circulation, and for general relaxation.

  • As a South American Smoking Herb: In Mexico and South America, the dried flowers and leaves are traditionally often smoked by locals as a nicotine-free tobacco substitute or for gentle relaxation due to their mild taste.

  • In the Garden (A Magnet for the Insect World!): It's not for nothing that it's called "Honeyweed" in English. When it blooms in midsummer, the entire stem buzzes and hums. The tiered labiate flowers are an extremely valuable, rich nectar source. They magically attract long-tongued bumblebee species (such as common carder bees and buff-tailed bumblebees) as well as endangered wild bees (such as solitary mining bees and mason bees), which can easily crawl deep into the flower calyxes. But also colorful butterflies (such as the peacock butterfly or the small tortoiseshell), hoverflies, and in the evening even moths (such as the hummingbird hawk-moth) are among the daily regulars at this blooming skyscraper. An absolute feast for any natural garden!

Curiosities The name "Marihuanilla" originated in Mexico. Locals used the herb at traditional festivals as a legal substitute when the "real" herb was unavailable or prohibited. The visual similarity of the leaves then made the nickname perfect. A brilliant and absolutely legal prank for your own front yard to make the neighbors sweat a little!

Location, Care & Winter Hardiness

  • Location: Full sun! The warmer and sunnier, the happier it is.

  • Soil: Extremely undemanding. Normal, well-drained garden soil is perfectly sufficient. It also copes wonderfully with drier periods.

  • Winter Hardiness (The Siberia Factor): The epithet "Siberian" motherwort already reveals it: this plant laughs at our local winters! If it grows as a biennial plant, the flat leaf rosette in the first year survives even the harshest frosts without any protection. If it grows as an annual and dies after seed formation, its seeds overwinter completely unharmed in the icy soil and reliably germinate anew in spring.

  • Care: It practically grows by itself. If you want to prevent it from self-seeding throughout the garden, you should cut off the flower stalks after they have faded in early autumn. If you leave them, they provide food for birds in winter and plenty of offspring in the next year.
