For my shop, I am always looking for plants that not only look beautiful but also offer real added value. With the Cat's Tail Plant (Bulbine frutescens), I have found just such a treasure for you! If you are looking for a plant that is extremely easy to care for, blooms tirelessly, and provides immediate relief from insect bites or sunburn in summer, then you will love this flowering aloe alternative as much as I do.

Origin: A piece of South African sun for you

Perhaps you also know it by names like Stalked Bulbine or "Burn Jelly Plant". With it, I bring a real piece of South Africa into your home. In its homeland, it grows in extremely dry, sun-drenched valleys and has learned to defy the most adverse conditions. It is precisely this robustness that makes it an incredibly grateful and indestructible plant for our domestic balconies.

Growth & Bloom: A continuous fireworks display of colors

I find the appearance of the Bulbine simply fantastic, as it combines succulent and flowering plant in one:

• The leaves: They grow in dense, lush green rosettes. If you touch them, you immediately notice: The grass-like leaves are fleshy and plump, filled with a jelly-like sap.

• The flower glory: My absolute highlight! From spring well into autumn, it continuously sends up new flower stalks. The delicate flowers shine on them – I promise you, the bees and butterflies will love them!

My care tips: Perfect if you don't have a green thumb

As a true succulent, it effortlessly forgives you for drought. Here's how to care for it properly:

• Location: Give it a nice spot that is sunny to partially shady. The more sun it gets, the more abundant the bloom usually is.

• Water & Soil: My most important advice to you: Less is more! I always mix the soil well with sand or perlite (cactus soil is also great). Always let the soil dry out well before the next watering and absolutely avoid waterlogging so that the roots do not rot.

• Overwintering: Since it is not winter hardy here, I place it indoors in a bright and cool place (approx. 5 °C to 10 °C) before the first frost. I water it very sparingly in winter – just enough so that the leaves do not completely shrivel.

Special features: Your green first-aid kit

What makes this plant so unique to me is the cooling sap in its leaves. I like to call it the "better Aloe Vera" because it grows much faster and also blooms beautifully.

• How to use it: Simply cut off a leaf, squeeze out the cooling gel, and apply it directly to your skin.

• The effect: The sap has antibacterial, soothing, and pain-relieving properties. I constantly use it in summer as a traditional home remedy for minor burns, sunburn, insect bites, or small scratches. A real natural miracle plaster!
