Wild Eggplant (Solanum melongena ssp. cumingii) - The Untamed Ancient Eggplant

Sale price  €3,60 Regular price  €4,00

Are you looking for an absolutely exotic plant that attracts all eyes and brings a real jungle feeling to your balcony? Then get to know Solanum melongena ssp. cumingii – one of the fascinating wild ancestors of our modern cultivated eggplant!

Perfect for lovers of Asian cuisine, collectors of rarities, and anyone looking for a plant with true character.

Scope of delivery: One plant in a 7cm pot.

Origin: The Roots of Flavor

The Solanum melongena ssp. cumingii originally comes from the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and India (including Thailand and the Philippines). There it grows wild as a perennial, bushy shrub. It is a living piece of agricultural history, showing us what the eggplant looked like before humans domesticated it over centuries.

🌱 Growth: A Thorny Space-Saver

Those who cultivate this plant can look forward to a real eye-catcher that visually differs greatly from normal eggplants:

  • Growth habit: It grows as a bushy, upright subshrub and can reach up to 1.5 – 2 meters in height in the wild (in a pot, it usually remains more compact).

  • Thorny foliage: The absolute highlight! The plant has striking, conspicuous green to purple thorns that grow on both the stems and the leaf veins.

  • Blooming splendor: It forms beautiful, star-shaped, light purple flowers, typical of nightshades.

  • Space requirement: It can be cultivated excellently in large pots on a balcony or terrace, where it can thrive magnificently.

Care: A Dream for Heat Lovers

As a tropical plant, this wild eggplant has precise, but easy-to-meet preferences:

  • Location: As sunny and warm as possible! It loves heat and needs a sheltered spot.

  • Water & Fertilizer: The soil should always be kept slightly moist (but without waterlogging). Since it produces many fruits, it appreciates regular nutrient applications in the form of vegetable fertilizer.

  • Overwintering: Unlike our native tomato, it is perennial in its homeland. Here, it does not tolerate frost and is either grown as an annual or overwintered indoors in a bright, frost-free location.

Taste: Small but Mighty!

Forget the huge, watery, purple clubs from the supermarket. These fruits are different:

  • Size & Shape: The fruits are small, round, and more reminiscent of small tomatoes (about 2–3 cm in diameter).

  • Flavor: They have a much more intense, original, and often slightly tart to bitter eggplant flavor, which becomes wonderfully soft and aromatic through cooking.

  • Use: The absolute must-have for authentic Asian dishes! They are excellent for real Thai curries or exotic stir-fries (always consume cooked).

Special Features, Curiosities & Interesting Facts

The Ancestor of Our Eggplants: Standing before this thorny plant with its small, yellow, tomato-like fruits, it's hard to believe that hundreds of years of cultivation led to our modern, soft, thornless, and purple supermarket eggplant!

  • Spectacular Color Change: The small round fruits are initially green (sometimes slightly striped) and change to a bright yellow as they ripen!

  • Botanical Confusion: Scientists have long debated the exact name of this wild form. Previously, it was often referred to as Solanum insanum (freely translated: the "mad" eggplant).

  • Perfect for Insects: The large, star-shaped flowers are a true magnet for bumblebees, which ensure that the plant sets abundant fruit through vibration ("buzz pollination").
