Wild eggplant (Solanum melongena ssp. cumingii) - The untamed ancestral eggplant
Are you looking for an absolutely exotic plant that draws everyone's attention and brings a real jungle feeling to your balcony? Then meet Solanum melongena ssp. cumingii – one of the fascinating wild ancestors of our modern, cultivated eggplant!
Perfect for lovers of Asian cuisine, collectors of rarities, and anyone looking for a plant with real character.
Scope of delivery: One plant in a 7cm pot.
Origin: The roots of flavor
The Solanum melongena ssp. cumingii originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and India (including Thailand and the Philippines). There, it grows wild in nature as a perennial, shrubby bush. It is a living piece of agricultural history and shows us what the eggplant looked like before humans domesticated it over the course of centuries.
🌱 Growth: A defensive space-saver
Anyone who grows this plant can look forward to a real eye-catcher that looks very different from regular eggplants:
-
Growth habit: It grows as a bushy, upright subshrub and can reach up to 1.5–2 meters in height in the wild (it usually stays a bit more compact in a pot).
-
Defensive foliage: The absolute highlight! The plant possesses striking, eye-catching green to violet spines that grow on both the stems and the leaf veins.
-
Abundant blooms: It forms beautiful, star-shaped, pale violet flowers, which are typical for nightshade plants.
-
Space requirements: It can be cultivated excellently in large tubs on a balcony or terrace, where it can unfold magnificently.
Care: A dream for warmth-lovers
As a tropical plant, this wild eggplant has specific but easily satisfied preferences:
-
Location: As sunny and warm as possible! It loves the heat and needs a sheltered spot.
-
Water & Fertilizer: The soil should always be kept slightly moist (but without waterlogging). Since it forms many fruits, it appreciates regular nutrient intake in the form of vegetable fertilizer.
-
Overwintering: Unlike our domestic tomato, it is perennial in its homeland. In our climate, it cannot tolerate frost and is either grown as an annual or overwintered indoors in a bright, frost-free location.
Taste: Small but mighty!
Forget the huge, watery, purple clubs from the supermarket. These fruits are different:
-
Size & Shape: The fruits are small, round, and resemble small tomatoes (about 2–3 cm in diameter).
-
Aroma: They have a much more intense, original, and often slightly tart to bitter eggplant flavor, which becomes wonderfully soft and aromatic through cooking.
-
Use: An absolute must-have for authentic Asian dishes! They are excellent for real Thai curries or exotic stir-fries.
-
Important: Only consume cooked!
Special features, curiosities & facts
The primeval mother of our eggplants: When standing in front of this thorny plant with its small, yellow, tomato-like fruits, it is hard to believe that hundreds of years of breeding resulted in today's soft, thornless, and purple supermarket eggplant!
-
Spectacular color change: The small round fruits are green at first (sometimes slightly striped) and turn a vibrant yellow as they ripen!
-
Confusion among botanists: Science long debated the exact name of this wild form. In the past, it was often referred to as Solanum insanum (roughly translated: the "crazy" eggplant).
-
Perfect for insects: The large, star-shaped flowers are a true magnet for bumblebees, which ensure that the plant sets plenty of fruit through vibration ("buzz pollination").
