The parrot's beak – called Kōwhai ngutukākā by the Māori in its New Zealand home and known in English-speaking countries as Kaka Beak or Parrot's Beak – is an absolute exotic and a true botanical rarity in its form as a white-flowering variety. This particular 'Alba' variety captivates with its spectacular, creamy-white blossoms, strikingly reminiscent of the beak of the New Zealand Kākā parrot. As an evergreen, slightly climbing shrub, it immediately draws all eyes in the winter garden or on the summer terrace. The elegantly feathered leaves form a beautiful contrast to the striking, pendulous flower clusters that appear from late spring into summer.

Scope of delivery: 10/ 50 seeds each

Sowing at a glance

  • Preparation: Lightly file the hard shell of the seeds (for example, with some sandpaper) and then let them swell in warm water for 24 hours.

  • Sowing depth: Place about 0.5 to 1 cm deep into the substrate.

  • Germination temperature: Constant 20 to 25 degrees Celsius.

  • Germination period: Usually 2 to 4 weeks. A little patience is required here.

  • Substrate: Very well-draining seed compost, preferably mixed with plenty of sand or perlite. Keep consistently slightly moist, but never wet.

Growth habit and location
The plant prefers a sunny to semi-shady, sheltered spot. The soil must be loose and nutritious. The long, soft shoots can be easily attached to a trellis or hang picturesquely from a large pot.

Pot cultivation and overwintering
As the parrot's beak is not frost-hardy in our climate, it is cultivated exclusively in pots. In summer, it should be watered regularly, but waterlogging must be avoided at all costs, as the roots react sensitively. Overwintering should be bright and frost-free at about 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. After flowering, a light pruning helps to keep the plant nicely compact and bushy over the years.

Origin
The original species is native to New Zealand and is unfortunately considered highly endangered in its natural habitats in the coastal areas there.
