Tomato 'Black Zebra' - The striped burst of flavor for your garden
Unfortunately, this is often the case in the vegetable patch: varieties that look spectacular often taste watery and bland on the plate. True flavor miracles, on the other hand, often come in a rather boring, uniform red. The “Black Zebra” tomato finally settles this either-or! It is an absolute visual rock star in your garden while simultaneously delivering the exact complex, spicy-sweet flavor that delights both the eye and the palate in equal measure.
Scope of delivery: Per plant in a 7cm pot.
Origin: The “Black Zebra” tomato is a true masterpiece of modern, open-pollinated breeding – a brilliant cross that combines the sweet and spicy flavor of dark tomatoes with the striking markings of the famous “Green Zebra”. You are not bringing a delicate little fashion doll into the bed that only looks good in photos, but a vigorous and reliable plant that was developed precisely to grow robustly and yield plentifully.
Not a vain little fashion doll, but a real workhorse
Don't let its extravagant exterior fool you! The Black Zebra is anything but a constant cause for concern. It is bursting with vigor and proves to be pleasantly uncomplicated to cultivate. Give it a sunny spot, ideally one slightly protected from rain (such as under an overhanging roof or in an airy greenhouse), and it will tirelessly produce new blossoms and fruit trusses all summer long.
Mahogany, green stripes, and pure spice
Visually, this medium-sized salad and cocktail tomato (about 40 to 70 grams) is an absolute spectacle: its skin glows in a deep, dark mahogany red to brownish-black and is crisscrossed with striking dark green stripes. However, the true highlight is its interior. The juicy flesh offers an incredible fireworks display of flavor. Do not expect a flat, standard taste, but a fascinating, complex blend of rich sweetness, a pleasant acidity, and an almost slightly smoky, spicy note that is typical of dark tomato varieties.
Aiming high with a lush harvest
As a classic indeterminate tomato, the Black Zebra grows rapidly in height and easily reaches 1.50 to 2 meters. Give it a sturdy plant stake or a spiral and regularly prune the side shoots (suckers). This ensures that it does not direct its entire energy into unnecessary foliage, but into the lush, striped fruit trusses. From midsummer deep into the autumn, you can look forward to a continuous harvest.
Into the kitchen – What to do with your harvest:
-
The visual salad highlight: Forget boring tomato salad! Cut into wedges and mixed with yellow or classic red varieties, the Black Zebra becomes the absolute star on any plate. A little olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and coarse sea salt are more than enough.
-
Snacking with style: Thanks to its handy size and intense flavor, it is excellent as a sophisticated snack straight from the vine or for your summer lunchbox.
-
Dark salsas & dips: Finely diced, the Black Zebra contributes not only its great spice but also a fantastic, dark color to homemade bruschetta mixes or fiery salsas.
-
Roasted flavors from the oven: The fruits can be wonderfully halved and roasted in the oven with a little garlic and herbs. The heat caramelizes the high sugar content, which intensifies the flavor even further.
Recipe tip: Black Zebra carpaccio with burrata and toasted pine nuts
Since the Black Zebra is such a visual stunner, it is best prepared in the kitchen in a way that allows its pattern to shine. This quick carpaccio is the ideal appetizer for warm summer evenings.
Ingredients (for 2 people):
-
4-5 Black Zebra tomatoes (best mixed with 2-3 yellow tomatoes for the ultimate color contrast)
-
1 fresh burrata (alternatively creamy buffalo mozzarella)
-
2 tbsp pine nuts
-
3 tbsp excellent olive oil
-
1 tbsp dark, thick balsamic glaze
-
A handful of fresh basil leaves
-
Coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Preparation:
-
Roasting: Toast the pine nuts in a small pan without oil over medium heat until golden brown. Be careful, they burn quickly! Afterward, let them cool on a plate.
-
Slicing: Wash the tomatoes, remove the stems, and cut them into wafer-thin slices using a very sharp knife.
-
Arranging: Fan the tomato slices out on a large, flat plate, overlapping them slightly so that the green stripes and dark color are shown off beautifully.
-
The centerpiece: Carefully place the burrata in the center of the plate and tear it open slightly with your fingers or a spoon so that the creamy core becomes visible.
-
Refining: Drizzle everything generously with the olive oil and balsamic glaze. Sprinkle the toasted pine nuts and fresh basil leaves over the top.
-
Seasoning: Finally, season generously with coarse sea salt and freshly cracked pepper from the mill. Best served immediately with fresh ciabatta for mopping up the delicious sauce.
Put an end to boring, monotonous red in the vegetable patch. With the Black Zebra, you are choosing a high-yielding, robust, and visually spectacular variety that will provide you with extraordinary moments of enjoyment from the beginning of summer well into the autumn.
