Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum)
One of the world's most spectacular plants for your living room
Scope of delivery: Seedling in a 9cm pot.
Are you looking for the ultimate highlight for your plant collection? Here it is. The titan arum is a botanical sensation and the pride of every botanical garden. Now you have the rare opportunity to grow this wonder of nature at home from a young age.
Growth & Appearance (Don't panic about the size!) The titan arum is known for having the largest inflorescence in the world, sometimes measuring over 3 meters. The plant itself is also a true giant: the tree-like, single leaf that the plant forms during its vegetative phase can reach a height of up to 5 meters! But don't worry: it takes years for the plant to reach these gigantic dimensions.
-
Growth cycle: The plant always forms only this one leaf from its corm, which looks like a small palm. It photosynthesizes for months, then dies back, and the corm enters a dormant phase.
-
The size grows slowly with it: With each new leaf cycle, the plant and corm grow a bit larger. Speaking of corms: these also break records and can weigh over 75 kg (in exceptional cases well over 100 kg) when fully grown! As a seedling and young plant, however, it remains absolutely suitable for indoor use for years and grows relaxed in its pot before it (in the distant future) unfolds its full potential.
Location, care & my personal expert tips This rare plant has precise ideas about its home. To prevent fluctuating temperatures, wind, and unwanted sun exposure, pure indoor cultivation is strongly preferred!
-
The right substrate: A purely mineral substrate is recommended. Especially with higher-value corms like this one, potential rot can be kept relatively low with proper care.
-
Watering & fertilizing: The substrate should be kept constantly moist (but without standing waterlogging). I fertilize them with half the "Wuxal" dose with every watering.
- Lighting: The plants in their growth phase depend on sufficient lighting. Plant lights are recommended to prevent etiolation.
- Temperature is key: The titan arum loves tropical conditions! The optimal temperature is approx. 25–28 °C. It should be at least 20 °C year-round. It is important that the pot is protected from any cold coming from below (styrofoam, heating mat, etc.) The iron rule is: The cooler it stands, the higher the risk of fatal corm rot.
-
The dormancy phase: When the leaf dies (usually after approx. 12-24 months), the plant retreats into the corm to rest. Important: Even dormant corms must never dry out completely! The substrate must always remain slightly moist even then.
Origin & Species Protection This exotic plant comes from the warm, humid, shady rainforests of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. There it grows in the undergrowth on steep, well-drained slopes. As natural habitats are severely threatened, this plant is subject to absolute protection:
Important note about my plants: The removal of seeds or corms from the wild is strictly forbidden! I am all the more pleased to be able to offer this rarity completely legally and ethically harmlessly: The seeds for growing these seedlings come from a responsible harvest by a specialized nursery directly in Indonesia. By purchasing, you therefore protect wild populations and at the same time contribute to the preservation of this fascinating species.
Special features & ingredients Like many Araceae (Araceae), the plant contains calcium oxalate crystals in all parts and is poisonous. The plant sap can be irritating upon skin contact.
Use The titan arum is a pure, spectacular collector's item. It is the undisputed queen for experienced plant lovers and collectors of rare aroids.
History & Curiosities It was discovered in 1878 by the Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari. When a botanical garden announces the blooming of a titan arum, people queue for hours. The reason (besides the incredible size) is the smell: to attract carrion beetles and sweat bees for pollination in its homeland, the gigantic bloom smells intensely of rotting flesh for about two days. An unforgettable (and fortunately very rare) natural spectacle!
