The Silver Wattle, often affectionately called False Mimosa, is an absolute dream for every plant lover. It captivates not only with its delicate, silvery-grey, fern-like foliage, but above all with its spectacular bloom. Already in late winter until early spring, it is covered with countless, bright yellow and fluffy flower balls, which also exude a wonderfully sweet fragrance. As an evergreen shrub or small tree, it brings a Mediterranean and exotic flair to the terrace or cold conservatory very early in the year.

Scope of delivery: 15/ 50 seeds each

My experiences and tips for sowing

  • Preparation: The seeds have an extremely hard shell. Before sowing, I pour hot water over them and let them soak for about 24 hours. This reliably breaks dormancy.

  • Sowing depth: Place the seeds about 0.5 to 1 cm deep into the substrate and press lightly.

  • Germination temperature: Constant warmth of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius is ideal.

  • Germination time: After hot water treatment, the first seedlings usually appear quickly after 2 to 4 weeks.

  • Substrate: I use very well-draining seed compost, preferably generously loosened with sand or perlite. Keep the substrate constantly slightly moist, but never wet.

Growth habit, location and care
The Silver Wattle is a true sun worshiper. It needs a full sun and as sheltered from wind as possible location. Incidentally, it develops its absolute and full bloom best after long, warm summers in which the plant could soak up plenty of sun and energy. It is not very demanding regarding the substrate, but it must be very well-draining, as the roots absolutely cannot tolerate waterlogging. Slightly acidic soil is preferred, which is why I like to mix some rhododendron soil into the loose potting soil. After flowering, it tolerates light pruning to remain beautifully compact and bushy over the years.

Use & Special Features
In addition to its function as a beautiful ornamental plant, the Silver Wattle also has great cultural and economic significance. In Southern France and Italy, the flowering branches are grown on a large scale as cut flowers. Under the name "Mimosa", the yellow branches are an absolute classic there and a traditional gift for International Women's Day. In addition, the intensely fragrant flowers are valued in the perfume industry for extracting valuable essential oils.

Pot cultivation and overwintering
Since it originates from warmer regions, the Silver Wattle is not reliably winter hardy in our latitudes. Although it tolerates slight sub-zero temperatures for a short time, when planted out, it only survives very mild winters in absolute wine-growing climates. Therefore, I prefer to cultivate it in a large pot. Overwintering is best done very brightly and cool, but frost-free at about 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. It is precisely in this cool resting phase that it opens its bright blossoms! In the winter months, watering is greatly reduced, but the root ball must never completely dry out.

Origin
This wonderful, evergreen tree is native to the southeastern regions of Australia and Tasmania.
