A safe and stylish place for special little things. This round, smoothly polished soapstone box shines in a soft cream-white, streaked with beautiful, natural marbling. The striking motif of this little container is the delicate black fish symbol (Ichthys), which adorns both the lid and the side. This ancient, expressive sign is framed by elegant, black-painted wave and ornamental borders, which give the box a wonderfully harmonious finish.
Each of these boxes is traditionally handcrafted in Kenya from natural soapstone, softly rounded, and then lovingly finished with these delicate details. Since the stone remains completely pure, the fine grain is always slightly different, making each piece an absolutely unmistakable one-of-a-kind item with a very unique, calming aura.
I have always been fascinated by pieces with such clear, peaceful symbolism, which is why this jewelry box fits so wonderfully into my collection. The box is a very meaningful gift – for example, for festive occasions like a confirmation, communion, or simply for a loved one to whom you wish protection and blessings. And, of course, it is also perfect for my own passion: there is hardly a more beautiful place to store the delicate seeds of rare plant treasures safely and in style. The soapstone products come from Tabaka, Kenya, a town with approx. 10,000 inhabitants located approx. 25km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The color of the stones varies between white, gray, yellow, and reddish tones, sometimes streaked with beautiful veins. The raw material is mined locally in quarries. The carvers are independent artists who each specialize in a specific product category. Tools used include chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The fine sanding, washing of the stone, waxing, and polishing is then usually performed by women from the family. The 100% manual labor results in differences in shape and color.
