A tender message that needs no words. With these softly curved, abstract soapstone angels, the wings on their backs come together to form the beautiful, unmistakable shape of a heart. Thanks to their soft, serene silhouettes, the smoothly polished figures radiate a deep sense of comfort and peaceful calm.

Since the soapstone is left completely natural and unpainted, it reveals its pure, unadorned beauty: the earthy natural hues range from soft cream white and delicate peach to a warm, lightly marbled rust red. Each of these little celestial beings is hand-carved in Kenya using traditional methods. The flowing, smooth body is shaped so flat and even at the base that the figure stands securely and steadily all by itself. Each rough stone is transformed into a true worry stone and a completely unique, one-of-a-kind piece.
Authentic, handmade treasures like these simply have a special soul—that’s why I absolutely had to stock them in my shop. They make a wonderfully comforting and heartfelt gift for someone who could use a little encouragement. And for me, as a plant lover: placed beside a freshly pricked-out seedling or a precious, rare plant, this angel makes a lovely little guardian and creates a particularly warm, sheltered atmosphere!
The soapstone products come from Tabaka, Kenya, a town of around 10,000 residents about 25 km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. Its color ranges from white, gray, and yellow to reddish hues, sometimes marked with beautiful veining. The raw material is quarried locally. The carvers are independent artists, each specializing in a particular product category. Their tools include chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The final sanding, washing, waxing, and polishing are usually carried out by women in the family. Because every piece is 100% handmade, each one varies in shape and color.
