The soapstone products originate from Tabaka, Kenya, a town of approximately 10,000 inhabitants located about 25 km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The color of the stones varies between white, gray, yellow, and reddish tones, sometimes streaked with beautiful graining. The raw material is mined locally in quarries. The carvers are independent artists who each specialize in a specific product category. Tools used include chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The finishing touches—washing the stone, waxing, and polishing—are usually performed by women from the family. This 100% manual craftsmanship results in variations in shape and color.
