For my shop, I am always on the lookout for plants that not only look beautiful but also offer real added value. With the cat's tail plant (Bulbine frutescens), I have found just such a treasure for you! If you are looking for a plant that is extremely easy to care for, blooms tirelessly, and provides immediate relief from insect bites or sunburn in the summer, you will love this flowering aloe alternative as much as I do.

Scope of delivery: Each young plant in a 7cm pot (white-flowering variety)

Alternatively, a 3-pack of one- to two-shoot cuttings for you to root yourself.

The most important features at a glance

To ensure you know exactly what to expect, I have summarized the most important characteristics here:

Characteristic Description
Botanical name Bulbine frutescens
Growth habit Evergreen succulent, grows in dense rosettes with grass-like, fleshy leaves; growth height approx. 30 to 40 cm
Flowering Persistent, continuous bloomer with delicate, star-shaped flowers on long stalks; varieties bloom in shades from brilliant white to yellow to bright orange
Special feature The “better Aloe Vera” – the cooling leaf sap works wonderfully for insect bites or minor burns Location Sunny to partially shaded; requires well-drained, loose soil
Winter hardiness Not winter-hardy; requires a bright and cool place indoors for wintering (approx. 5 °C to 10 °C)

Origin: A piece of South African sun for you

You might also know it by names like cat's tail or “burn jelly plant.” With this plant, I am bringing a real piece of South Africa into your home. In its native habitat, it grows in extremely dry, sun-drenched valleys and has learned to defy the most adverse conditions. It is precisely this robustness that makes it an incredibly rewarding and indestructible plant for our domestic balconies.

Growth & Flowering: A continuous firework of colors

I find the appearance of the Bulbine simply fantastic because it combines the characteristics of both a succulent and a flowering plant:

  • The leaves: They grow in dense, lush green rosettes. If you touch them, you will notice immediately: the grass-like leaves are fleshy and plump, filled with a gel-like sap.

  • The floral display: My absolute highlight! From spring well into autumn, it repeatedly pushes up new flower stalks. Delicate flowers bloom on them – I promise you, the bees and butterflies will love them!

My care tips: Perfect if you don't have a green thumb

As a true succulent, it effortlessly forgives you for periods of drought. Here is how to look after it properly:

  • Location: Give it a nice spot that is sunny to partially shaded. The more sun it gets, the more lush the blooming generally is.

  • Water & Soil: My most important advice to you: less is more! I always mix the soil well with sand or perlite (cactus soil is also great). Always let the soil dry out well before watering again and definitely avoid waterlogging so that the roots do not rot.

  • Wintering: Since it is not winter-hardy here, I move it indoors to a bright and cool place (approx. 5 °C to 10 °C) before the first frost. In winter, I only water it very sparingly – just enough so that the leaves do not shrivel up completely.

Special features: Your green first-aid kit

What makes this plant so unique for me is the cooling sap in its leaves. I like to call it the “better Aloe Vera” because it grows much faster and also blooms beautifully.

  • How to use it: Simply cut off a leaf, squeeze out the cooling jelly, and apply it directly to your skin.

  • The effect: The sap has antibacterial and soothing properties and relieves pain. In the summer, I use it constantly as a traditional home remedy for minor burns, sunburn, insect bites, or small scratches. A real natural wonder plaster!

(Legal note: I share the description of the medicinal effect based on my own experience and for informational purposes only. Naturally, it is no substitute for a doctor's visit.)
