So that you know exactly what to expect, I have summarized the most important characteristics here:

| Hardiness | Not hardy; requires a bright and cool place (approx. 5°C to 10°C) indoors for the winter |
Origin: A piece of South African sun for you
Perhaps you also know it by names like cat’s tail or “burn jelly plant.” With it, I am bringing a real piece of South Africa into your home. In its native habitat, it grows in extremely dry, sun-drenched valleys and has learned to withstand the most adverse conditions. It is precisely this robustness that makes it such an incredibly rewarding and indestructible plant for our local balconies.
Growth & Flowering: A permanent fireworks display of color
I find the look of the Bulbine simply fantastic, as it combines a succulent and a flowering plant in one:
-
The leaves: They grow in dense, lush green rosettes. When you touch them, you immediately notice: the grass-like leaves are fleshy and plump, filled with a gel-like sap.
-
The flowering: My absolute highlight! From spring until well into autumn, it keeps pushing up new flower stems. The delicate blossoms shine on them – I promise you, the bees and butterflies will love them!
My care tips: Perfect if you don’t have a green thumb
As a true succulent, it easily forgives you for drought. Here is how to care for it properly:
-
Location: Give it a nice spot that is sunny to partially shaded. In general, the more sun it gets, the more lush the flowering will be.
-
Water & Soil: My most important advice to you: Less is more! I always mix the soil well with sand or perlite (cactus soil is also great). Always let the soil dry out well before watering again and absolutely avoid waterlogging so that the roots do not rot.
-
Overwintering: Since it is not hardy here, I move it into the house before the first frost to a bright and cool spot (approx. 5°C to 10°C). I water it only very sparingly in winter – just enough so that the leaves do not shrivel up completely.
Special features: Your green first-aid kit
What makes this plant so unique for me is the cooling sap in its leaves. I like to call it the "better Aloe Vera" because it grows much faster and blooms beautifully too.
-
How to use it: Simply cut off a leaf, squeeze out the cooling jelly, and apply it directly to your skin.
-
The effect: The sap has an antibacterial, soothing effect and relieves pain. In the summer, I constantly use it as a traditional home remedy for minor burns, sunburn, insect bites, or small scratches. A real natural wonder bandage!
(Legal notice: I am sharing the description of the healing effects based on my own experience and for informational purposes only. It naturally does not replace a visit to a doctor.)
