The Golden Thistle is a fascinating, biennial native wild plant, particularly striking due to its architectural growth habit and the straw-like, golden-yellow flower heads. These open in sunshine and close in humid weather – a wonderful natural spectacle that has also earned it the name "weather thistle." Even when spent in winter, the decorative flower heads remain intact for a long time. They are great structural elements in the garden and a very popular base for dried bouquets. Furthermore, it is a true magnet for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, and greatly enhances any natural garden ecologically.

Scope of delivery: 20 seeds each

Sowing at a glance

  • Preparation: No special pre-treatment necessary.

  • Sowing depth: Light germinator! Sprinkle the seeds superficially on the substrate and press lightly, do not cover with soil under any circumstances.

  • Germination temperature: Constant 15 to 20 degrees Celsius.

  • Germination time: Usually 2 to 4 weeks.

  • Substrate: Very permeable, rather lean sowing soil, preferably generously leached with sand. Keep constantly slightly moist, but never wet.

Growth habit and location
The plant loves full sun, hot locations. The soil should be well-drained, preferably calcareous, stony or sandy, and absolutely nutrient-poor. It is extremely drought-resistant and perfectly suited for rock gardens, the edge of dry stone walls, or natural lean meadows. In the first year, it forms a flat, spiky leaf rosette. Only in the second year does the flower stem grow to a height of about 20 to 60 cm, flowers, and finally forms new seeds.

Winter hardiness and care
As a native wild plant, the Golden Thistle is absolutely winter hardy and requires no protection. In the right location, it is extremely easy to care for, only needs some water during extreme drought periods after germination, and gets by completely without fertilizer. If the spent heads are left standing, it will self-seed in suitable locations and thus naturally maintain itself in the garden for many years.

Origin
The Golden Thistle is native to large parts of Europe, where it predominantly grows on sunny lean and dry grasslands, in open woodlands, and on stony embankments.
