The most fascinating thing about this tree, however, is not only its origin, but an almost magical property: it belongs to the so-called Mimosa trees. As soon as the sun goes down or a dark summer thunderstorm gathers, the tree folds its countless, tiny pinnate leaves together as if by magic and literally goes to sleep. • Growth habit and height: The Yellow Silk Tree usually grows as a picturesque, multi-stemmed large shrub or small tree with a broad, umbrella-shaped crown. In our latitudes, it usually reaches a height of 4 to 6 meters and grows wonderfully sprawling. A gentle pruning in late winter is possible to emphasize the umbrella shape, but often not even necessary.

• The ideal location: Give it the warmest, sunniest and most sheltered spot your garden has to offer. A sheltered south-facing wall, a warm courtyard or a full-sun spot on the lawn are its absolute paradise.

• The soil: Less is more here! The Albizia loves well-drained, rather lean and sandy soils. It does not like waterlogging and too heavy, wet soil. If your soil is very clayey, be sure to mix plenty of sand or fine gravel into the soil when planting to ensure good drainage.

Heat-loving sun worshipper instead of thirsty exotic

Forget constant watering on hot August days! Once the Albizia kalkora is properly rooted, it is extremely drought-tolerant. Thanks to its deep root system, it can easily supply itself even on weeks of hot days, while other plants have long since wilted. This makes it an incredibly robust companion for increasingly hot summers.

Winter hardiness and frost protection: Into winter quarters for the first few years!

Even if older, well-established specimens of the Yellow Silk Tree develop astonishing winter hardiness over time, the golden rule for young plants in the first two to three years is: play it safe and bring the young plants indoors for the winter! Since the wood is still very soft when young and sensitive to frost, you protect them from nasty surprises:

• The perfect winter quarters: Since the tree sheds its leaves completely in autumn, it is in a deep dormant phase. This is your big advantage! It does not need light in its winter quarters. You can easily overwinter the young plant in its pot in a cool, dark and frost-free room such as an unheated garage, a cool cellar or a shed.

• Care in winter: The plant hardly needs any attention during the cold season. Keep the soil only minimally moist so that the root ball never becomes completely bone dry. Of course, no fertilizer is applied in winter quarters.

• The way outside in spring: As soon as there is no longer a risk of severe, continuous frost in spring (from around April), the silk tree can go back out into the fresh air. In the first few days, accustom it slowly to the sun in a semi-shady spot to avoid sunburn on the freshly sprouting leaves.

The secret to maximum winter hardiness outdoors

If you plant your tree outdoors after a few years, one thing in particular will determine how well it survives icy winters: the soil! The Yellow Silk Tree is many times more winter-hardy on well-drained, sandy-gravelly soils than in heavy soil. If the soil retains moisture like a wet sponge in winter, the roots will rot extremely quickly when it freezes, which is fatal for the tree. In dry, excellently drained soil, however, the wood matures much better in summer and the roots can easily survive even crisp sub-zero temperatures. Be sure to choose spring for planting in the garden so that the plant can root deeply by winter, and additionally protect the soil with a thick layer of leaves in the first few years.
