The 'Black Krim' tomato (often found under its French name 'Noire de Crimée') is one of the most flavorful dark heirloom varieties. This open-pollinated beefsteak tomato impresses with its stately, flat-round fruits, which range in color from a deep mahogany red to a dark chocolate brown, with the shoulders often remaining a striking olive green. Its flesh is extremely juicy and soft. Among connoisseurs, it is legendary for its complex, spicy-sweet and slightly smoky aroma with a very low acidity level.

Growth habit, location, and care:
The 'Black Krim' is a vigorous, indeterminate tomato variety that easily reaches heights of 1.50 to over 2.00 meters. It requires stable support (sturdy plant stake or twine) from the very beginning. A full-sun, warm location is ideal. Since the relatively soft skin of the fruit tends to burst during heavy downpours or significantly fluctuating water supply, protected cultivation in a greenhouse or under a rain cover is highly recommended. To optimally direct the plant's energy, regular pruning of suckers is essential; it is best to grow this variety with one or two stems. As a heavy feeder, it requires deep, humus-rich soil. A generous application of mature compost at planting and subsequent potassium-rich fertilizer applications ensure a bountiful harvest.
Harvest and use:
The fruits (usually weighing between 150 and 350 grams) are ready for harvest when they have reached their deep, dark red to brownish color and yield to gentle pressure. Since this variety's aroma is so outstanding, it should primarily be used for fresh consumption. It is the ultimate tomato for an exceptional carpaccio, a colorful highlight in mixed summer salads, or an absolute delight when served classically in thick slices with a little good olive oil and sea salt.
Origin:
This valuable heirloom variety originally comes from the Crimean Peninsula on the Black Sea. From there, it began its global triumph at the end of the 20th century and is now considered an absolute favorite among enthusiasts of heirloom vegetable varieties due to its unmistakable taste.
