False Sea Onion / Pregnant Onion (Albuca bracteata) - The South African Curio
Pickup available at Bei der Kirche 3
Usually ready in 24 hours
Some plants don't captivate with opulent cascades of blossoms, but rather with their utterly unique, almost architectural growth and astounding reproductive behavior. The pregnant onion is exactly such an exotic specimen. The absolute highlight of this easy-to-care-for Asparagaceae plant is its above-ground, glossy green bulb. Not only do long, succulent green leaf strips emerge from it, but over time, it also produces countless small daughter bulbs directly beneath its papery outer skin. A fascinating spectacle that has earned the plant the fitting name "Pregnant Onion" in English-speaking regions.

Origin & Cultural Background:
The pregnant onion originally comes from the dry, sun-drenched regions of South Africa. There, it has learned to store extreme amounts of water in its fleshy bulb to survive months of drought unscathed. Under its widely used older name Ornithogalum caudatum, this botanical curiosity made its way to Europe as early as the 19th century. It quickly developed into a popular, indestructible windowsill plant in historical plant collections, as it readily gives its small "babies" to curious plant lovers.
Traditional Use & Botanical Note: In its native land and historical folk medicine, the bulb's sap was traditionally applied to the skin to treat minor wounds, insect bites, or skin irritations, similar to how aloe vera is used. From a botanical perspective, however, caution is advised: The plant contains cardiac glycosides and sharp calcium oxalate crystals, making it highly toxic if ingested. Since the sap can also cause skin irritations or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, it should not be used carelessly despite its folk medicine history and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
Botanical Specialty: The Visible Nursery
The growth of this quirky bulbous plant is a constant spectacle for the eye. The main bulb sits flat on the substrate and becomes stronger and greener with age. Small, pea-sized bulbils continuously develop under its thin, almost transparent protective skin.
As soon as these are ripe, they break through the papery skin of the mother plant and usually fall to the ground on their own, where they root within a few days. If desired, the small bulbs can also be carefully detached by hand and placed in their own pots – there is hardly an easier and more rewarding propagation method in the plant world.
Architectural Inflorescences in Summer
In addition to its curious bulb shape, the plant surprises throughout the year with an impressive flower stalk. This often shoots steeply upwards far over a meter and bears a cluster of up to one hundred small, star-shaped individual flowers. The delicate, white petals are each traversed by an elegant, olive-green longitudinal stripe. The flowering period extends over several weeks, as the buds open one after another from bottom to top.
Requirements and Care Indoors and in the Summer Garden
In terms of ease of care, this South African survivor is hard to beat. A bright, sunny spot on the windowsill is ideal so that the leaves remain strong and do not etiolate. For the substrate, a well-draining cactus or succulent soil is perfect, as waterlogging is the only thing that will cause the bulb to rot.
Water very sparingly – the soil should be allowed to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, the plant appreciates a cooler resting phase at about 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, during which watering is almost completely stopped. The plant also loves to spend the summer in a rain-protected, sunny spot on the balcony or terrace.
