When I discovered this droll little figure, I knew immediately: It fits perfectly here! Unicorns represent a bit of magic in everyday life, and this special specimen instantly brings a good mood with its cute, unique shape.
The smoothly polished sculpture captivates with its abstract, wonderfully bulbous form with a large, cuddly snout, a small horn, and a cute stubby tail. Since the soapstone is left completely pure and unpainted here, nature alone determines the final appearance: the earthy, natural coloring manifests in warm, delicate pink to peach tones, interspersed with fine natural inclusions and marbling. It is precisely these whims of nature that make each piece a completely unmistakable unique item based solely on the individual composition of the stone. Each of these unicorns is carved by hand in Kenya in a traditional manner and gently rounded, making it a true delight to hold.
Because I simply love such honest, natural materials, this charming mythical creature definitely had to be in my shop. It is an enchanting, imaginative gift for a loved one or a happy little lucky charm for yourself. And a little decorating tip: this magical little creature feels particularly at home between pots on the windowsill—perhaps right next to a freshly grown rare plant or guarding your seed box—and brings a wonderful lightness to the room!
The soapstone products come from Tabaka, Kenya, a town of about 10,000 inhabitants located approx. 25km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The color of the stones varies between white, gray, yellow, and reddish tones, sometimes traversed by beautiful graining. The raw material is mined locally in quarries. The carvers are independent artists who each specialize in a specific product area. The tools used are chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The finishing, washing of the stone, waxing, and polishing are then usually carried out by women from the family. Due to the 100% handmade process, differences in shape and color are to be expected.
