A calm anchor for your home and a wonderful place to store your most cherished little treasures. This rectangular soapstone box stands out for its fascinating, deep blue-green color. The lid is adorned with a beautiful, hand-painted motif of a turtle.
The turtle is an ancient symbol of patience, wisdom, endurance, and a long life in many cultures. Each of these little chests is carved, painted, and finally refined with these fine engravings by hand in Kenya using traditional methods. This makes every piece an absolute one-of-a-kind with a wonderfully calming, grounding aura.
I have added this fascinating box to my collection because it exudes such a beautiful tranquility that is often missing in our hectic daily lives. As a plant lover myself, the turtle fits wonderfully with the patient care our green darlings need and the steady growth of nature. The box makes a meaningful gift for a special person and is an ideal, secure place to store small mementos, jewelry, or your most precious seeds. A small, handmade work of art that brings a lot of warmth and character!
The soapstone products come from Tabaka/Kenya, a town with approx. 10,000 inhabitants located about 25km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The color of the stones varies between white, gray, yellow, and reddish tones, sometimes streaked with beautiful graining. The raw material is extracted locally in quarries. The carvers are independent artists who each specialize in one product area. Tools used include chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The fine finishing, washing of the stone, waxing, and polishing are usually carried out by women from the family. The 100% handmade nature results in differences in shape and color.
