Originally, this elegant giant is at home in the vast, sometimes rugged mountain regions and canyons of the Argentine Andes. There, the vigorous perennial grows majestically upwards at the edges of light forests and in moist, cool mountain woods. This fascinating wild species traveled to Europe as a botanical treasure as early as the end of the 19th century and took local gardens by storm.

Its true magic reveals itself to us as soon as the sun dips lower: countless elongated white flower trumpets unfold from the deep green, hanging from the shoots like tiny shooting stars. On warm summer days, the plant lives up to its name and envelops the surroundings for a great distance in an intense, sweet fragrance.

Care & Wintering: Surprisingly undemanding

• The perfect location: Treat this South American beauty to a slightly calcareous substrate—it loves that especially! Otherwise, it grows tirelessly in a bright spot.

• Relaxed through the winter: Flowering tobacco is often kept as an annual, but it can be excellently overwintered in a cool place! Young plants in pots in particular handle the cold season without any problems at around 5 to 10 °C. A bright location is optimal, but surprisingly, the plant also copes with relatively dark corners.

• Fascinating winter growth: Don't be alarmed if the plant continues to grow in a shady winter quarter and looks surprisingly pale. That is completely normal! As soon as the first light hits the leaves in spring, this deficiency is quickly balanced out, and the flowering tobacco will soon shine in its usual green.
