Balcony Tomato 'Bajaja' - The space-saving marvel
You don't have your own garden, but still don't want to miss out on fresh, homegrown tomatoes? Then the "Bajaja" cherry tomato is exactly your variety! It's a real space-saver and perfect for the balcony or terrace.
-
Taste: Small but mighty! The bright red, round mini-tomatoes (approx. 8–10 grams) are crispy, wonderfully juicy, and have a wonderfully refreshing, sweet-fruity aroma. Perfect for popping directly from the vine into your mouth or for lunchboxes.
-
Growth: The Bajaja is a so-called balcony or bush tomato. It grows extremely compact, bushy, and usually only reaches up to 50 centimeters in height. The best part for you: You don't need to prune it! Just let it grow. It will naturally form a beautiful, dense crown that later artfully bows downwards under the weight of the fruits.
-
Special features: Its yield for such a tiny plant is almost unbelievable. With good care, a single Bajaja can produce hundreds of small tomatoes throughout the season (growers speak of up to 700 pieces!). It also ripens very early, so you can enjoy the first fruits in early summer.
-
Good to know: You absolutely don't need a garden bed for it. A pot with about 10 liters of soil or a normal balcony box is perfectly sufficient. It also looks fantastic in a hanging basket, where the countless red fruit trusses are beautifully showcased.
Hey, you definitely have space for the Bajaja! Just put a flowerpot on your balcony table or hang it in a basket. You don't have to prune anything, tie anything up – just water it and snack on hundreds of small tomatoes all summer long!
What you can do with Bajaja:
-
The ultimate desk & school snack: Forget gummy bears! Just put a bowl of freshly picked Bajajas on your desk or pack them in your kids' lunchboxes. Because they are so small and have a firm, crisp skin, they don't get squashed during transport and can be gobbled up in one bite.
-
The "Toss Salad" (No chopping required): Don't feel like spending a long time chopping tomatoes after work? The Bajaja is so tiny that you can toss it whole into your leaf salad or pasta salad. When you bite into it, the sweet juice bursts directly in your mouth – a great experience!
-
Party Skewers "Caprese To-Go": Planning a summer party or barbecue? Take a toothpick, skewer a Bajaja tomato, a mini mozzarella ball, and a small basil leaf. Drizzle with a little balsamic glaze, and you have the perfect, bite-sized finger food without tomato juice running down your fingers.
-
The 10-Minute After-Work Pasta: Throw two to three handfuls of whole Bajaja tomatoes together with some garlic into a hot pan with olive oil. Put the lid on and wait 3 minutes until they gently burst. Add fresh pasta directly from the pot, toss, sprinkle with Parmesan – the fastest and freshest dinner in the world!
-
Freeze for winter: If your Bajaja completely gets out of hand in mid-summer and you can't keep up with eating them: Wash the small tomatoes, pat them dry, and freeze them whole in a freezer bag. In winter, you can throw them frozen directly into hot soups or sauces, where they will thaw and cook down immediately!
The Bajaja is nature's healthy "fast food." It grows in a pot right next to your deck chair – all you really have to do is lean over and open your mouth!
