Centrosema pubescens is an incredibly vigorous, tropical climbing plant, that immediately catches the eye with its fascinating, delicate purple flowers. Its large, butterfly-shaped flowers stand out with their fine dark veining and a striking white center. I appreciate this plant not only for its enormous ornamental value on trellises, fences, or on the balcony, but also for its extremely useful properties: As a legume, it naturally enriches the soil with nitrogen. An absolute highlight for anyone, looking for fast, exotic growth and an easy-care plant in one.

Package contents: 10 seeds each

Growth habit, location, and care: Centrosema pubescens forms long, twining shoots, that quickly develop dense foliage and are perfectly suited for quickly covering supports. It loves a full sun to partial shade, warm location. It makes remarkably few demands on the soil, as it practically produces its own nitrogen fertilizer with the help of root nodules. The only important thing is good substrate drainage, to avoid waterlogging. You can generally completely do without additional fertilization for this plant.

Overwintering: Since it comes from the tropics, Centrosema is absolutely not winter hardy in our climate. In our latitudes, it is usually cultivated outdoors as an annual summer flower, as it gains enormous mass and blooms profusely within just one season. If you have a container plant and want to grow it for several years, you can prune it back vigorously before the first frost and overwinter it indoors in a bright, cool place at about 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.

Origin and taxonomy: Botanically, Centrosema pubescens belongs to the large legume family (Fabaceae). Its original home is in tropical Central and South America. There, due to its dense growth, drought tolerance, and outstanding soil-improving properties, it is widely used as valuable green manure and erosion control.
