Origin & Special features: Centuries of gardening tradition
Did you know that tomatillos were lovingly cultivated by the Aztecs and Mayans long before our modern red tomato even began its rise to fame? They were among the absolute staple foods of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The "Queen of Malinalco" is an absolute historical rarity, originating from the region of the same name in Mexico, which is shaped by ancient Aztec temples. While the classic, green ancestral varieties are mostly grown today as simple vegetables for spicy salsas, this particular queen is a true dessert experience. You are bringing a living piece of centuries-old history into your garden – paired with a sweet, tropical fruit experience that will amaze even experienced gardeners and chefs.
Bushy growth and abundant harvest
Leave the strict rules of tomato growing behind! The Queen of Malinalco does not grow stubbornly upward, but rather happily, bushily, and spreading out. Give it some space in width and support its many branches with a tomato cage or a few stakes, because its branches will get quite heavy under the weight of the countless lanterns in late summer. It loves the sun and will unfold its full splendor in a large tub on the patio or in a warm garden bed.
Important gardener's tip: Unlike tomatoes, tomatillos are not self-pollinating. You absolutely need at least two plants side-by-side so that the bees can diligently pollinate them and you can bring in a rich harvest!
Elegant shape and tropical sweetness
Visually, it is a true masterpiece: the fruits grow well protected inside a paper-like husk. When these delicate lanterns tear open, they reveal not the typical round fruits, but elegant, elongated, almost drop or torpedo-shaped ones. When they fully ripen and change from a light green to a bright golden yellow, they unfold their incredible aroma: they are surprisingly sweet and extremely fruity. The taste is reminiscent of a heavenly blend of pineapple, melon, and a fine touch of citrus. The flesh is wonderfully juicy and crisp.
Off to the kitchen – What you can do with your harvest:
-
The perfect snacking fruit: Remove the husk, briefly wash off the slightly sticky resin under water, and enjoy pure. A wonderfully sweet and fruity snack straight from the bush.
-
The jam miracle: Due to its naturally high pectin content and strong inherent sweetness, it is fantastic for boiling down into exotic jams or fruit spreads.
-
The highlight in fruit salad: Thanks to its eye-catching shape and pineapple-like taste, it adds an exciting, unexpected note to any fresh summer salad.
The sweet salsa: It is the ideal base for fruity dips (e.g., in combination with mango) that go excellently with grilled poultry or white fish.
Bring that tropical flair right to your home! With the "Queen of Malinalco" tomatillo, you are choosing a historical rarity that will visually enrich your garden and surprise your palate with pure, exotic sweetness well into the autumn.
