The 'Merveille des Marchés' tomato is an outstanding, historic salad tomato from France that lives up to its name, "Wonder of the Markets." This open-pollinated variety produces beautiful, flawlessly round, and bright rosy-red to crimson fruits that weigh between 150 and 200 grams on average. It impresses with its pleasantly thin skin and an extremely juicy, soft interior. Its flavor is a true experience: wonderfully balanced with a perfect harmony of refreshing acidity and intense, fruity sweetness. In the garden, it proves to be uncomplicated, extremely high-yielding, and not very prone to fruit cracking.

Growth habit, location, and care:
'Merveille des Marchés' is a vigorous indeterminate tomato that reaches a height of 1.50 to 2.00 meters. It must be guided upwards using a plant stake, spiral, or string. To direct the plant's energy into the large fruits and ensure good air circulation for the foliage, regular pruning of side shoots (suckering) is important—it is best grown with one or two main stems. The location must be fully sunny and warm. Protection from rain, such as a tomato roof or greenhouse cultivation, protects the leaves from moisture and prevents late blight. Deep soil enriched with plenty of compost and a steady supply of nutrients (preferably with a potassium-rich tomato fertilizer) guarantee a rich harvest until autumn.
Harvest and use:
The fruits are ready to harvest when they are uniformly rose-red and give slightly under light pressure. Thanks to their thin skin and the perfect ratio of flesh to juice, the 'Merveille des Marchés' is the ultimate salad tomato. It is excellent for fresh tomato carpaccio, classic Caprese, on sandwiches, or simply as a snack. Although it is best enjoyed fresh, its full flavor also makes it wonderful for cooking into sauces or soups.
Origin:
This traditional variety was introduced in France around 1880. For decades, it was an absolute bestseller at the large vegetable markets in and around Paris (such as the famous Les Halles). Market traders and buyers valued it then as they do now for its visual flawlessness, reliable yields, and above all, its outstanding, authentic tomato flavor.
