What makes these little stones special is their lovingly crafted, double-sided design: On one side, a classic, cheerful smiley face beams at you, while the other side features the encouraging phrase “KEEP SMILING” in beautiful, clear lettering. Each button is lovingly handmade from natural soapstone, with smooth, rounded edges and hand-painted details. The result is a delightful little worry stone that is always completely unique, thanks to the stone’s individual texture and hand-painted finish.

The soapstone products come from Tabaka, Kenya, a town with around 10,000 residents, about 25 km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The stones range in color from white, gray, and yellow to reddish tones, sometimes featuring beautiful veining. The raw material is mined locally in quarries. The carvers are independent artists, each specializing in a particular product category. Their tools include chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The final sanding, washing, waxing, and polishing are usually carried out by women in the family. Because each piece is 100% handmade, there are variations in shape and color.
