Exotic-looking yet wonderfully robust: Sophora davidii, known in English as David's Sophora or Chinese Scholar Tree, is a deciduous ornamental shrub native to the barren mountainous regions and dry river valleys of Central and Western China. It is still an absolute rarity in our gardens. With its delicate, pinnate leaves and fascinating, light blue-white butterfly-like flowers, this shrubby and slightly thorny exotic brings a romantic lightness to any bed in early summer. It usually reaches a height of 1.0 to 2.5 meters. A low-maintenance and drought-resistant eye-catcher that is also a valuable bee pasture, a real magnet for insects, and, as a legume, even fixes nitrogen in the soil independently!

Sowing at a glance

Preparation: Lightly roughen the seeds with some sandpaper before sowing, then soak in lukewarm water for about 24 hours.

A robust long-flowering plant from the Far East
What makes Sophora davidii so special is its origin in the harsh Chinese mountainous regions, which has made it incredibly resilient. Visually, it impresses with the great contrast between fine, almost fern-like foliage and the slightly thorny branches, which give the shrub an exciting structure. In May and June, it then presents its true treasure: countless small, blue-white flowers.
Location and proper care
This fascinating ornamental shrub is wonderfully uncomplicated. It loves full sun and feels most comfortable in a warm, sunny location. It makes hardly any demands on the soil – a well-draining, even lean or sandy substrate is perfectly sufficient for it. Once well established, David's Sophora is extremely drought-tolerant and copes perfectly with longer periods of heat in summer. However, you should absolutely avoid waterlogging.
Frost hardiness and safe overwintering
Unlike many other exotic plants, you don't have to worry about Sophora davidii in winter. It is excellently equipped for our latitudes with strong frost hardiness of up to -20 degrees Celsius. Therefore, when planted in the garden, it does not require special winter protection. Only small young plants or specimens that you keep permanently in pots appreciate light protection of the root ball from complete freezing in the first one to two years. In autumn, the shrub loses its leaves and goes into its well-deserved winter rest to sprout vigorously again in spring.
