The heart is attached to a sturdy keyring via a short, silver-colored link chain. Every single piece is crafted from natural soapstone in Kenya with great dedication and lovingly painted. This traditional handicraft makes every keychain a unique piece, and its rounded shape makes it a wonderful tactile object to keep in your pocket.
I added these cheerful keychains to my range because they are such a simple yet heartfelt gift for someone special – or a great lucky charm for your own keychain. This way, you always have a little portion of heart and positive energy with you, whether you're out and about or opening the door in the morning, looking forward to checking on your green protégés.
The soapstone products come from Tabaka, Kenya, a town of approximately 10,000 residents located about 25 km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The color of the stones varies between white, gray, yellow, and reddish tones, sometimes streaked with beautiful veins. The raw material is extracted locally in quarries. The carvers are independent artists who each specialize in a specific product area. Tools used include chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The final finishing, washing of the stone, waxing, and polishing are then usually carried out by women from the family. The 100% handmade process results in differences in shape and color.
