The heart is attached to a classic, sturdy keyring via a short link chain. Each individual piece is crafted in Kenya from natural soapstone with great dedication and skilled craftsmanship, and then painted. This traditional handicraft makes every keychain a unique piece with its own warm character.
I have added this keychain to my range because it is simply a wonderful, uncomplicated gift for a loved one – or a colorful good-luck charm for your own keychain. That way, you always have a little bit of warmth with you, whether you are on the go or unlocking the garden door to check on your exotic green protégés.
The soapstone products come from Tabaka, Kenya, a town of approx. 10,000 inhabitants located about 25 km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The color of the stones varies between white, gray, yellow, and reddish tones, sometimes veined with beautiful markings. The raw material is mined locally in quarries. The carvers are independent artists who each specialize in a specific product area. The tools used are chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The final sanding, washing of the stone, waxing, and polishing is usually carried out by women from the family. The 100% manual production accounts for the differences in shape and color.
