The '18 Days' radish (botanically Raphanus sativus) is the absolute sprinter of the vegetable garden. This traditional, open-pollinated variety lives up to its name, delivering crisp, fresh yields extremely quickly. Visually, it impresses with its characteristic, half-long, cylindrical shape: the top third glows a vibrant carmine red, which fades to a pure white toward the tip of the root. In terms of flavor, it is convincing with a fine, mild-spicy, and refreshing aroma that is pleasantly tangy but never too sharp, provided the water supply is consistent.

Growth habit, location, and care:
The '18 Days' radish grows rapidly and develops relatively short, strong foliage. A sunny to partially shaded location is ideal; in midsummer, partial shade is preferable to prevent premature bolting (flowering). The soil should be loose, crumbly, and rich in humus, but does not require fresh fertilization, as radishes are light feeders. Too much nitrogen results in a lot of leaves but tiny bulbs. The most important care measure is consistent, regular watering. Fluctuating moisture causes the tender roots to crack, while persistent drought makes them woody, pithy, and overly sharp.

Harvest and use:
Under optimal conditions in the spring, the radishes are actually ready for harvest about 18 to 25 days after germination. They should be harvested when they are about finger-thick; if left in the bed too long, they lose their crunchiness. Because of their mild, refreshing taste, they are ideal for raw consumption: perfect as a healthy snack straight from the garden, sliced thinly onto fresh buttered bread, or as a colorful contrast in crisp spring salads.

Origin:
This historical variety originates from France, where it was already prized in the late 19th century for its unparalleled growth speed. As a classic variety for the very first planting of the gardening year, it quickly spread throughout Europe and remains one of the most popular standard varieties for the impatient and for guaranteed quick harvest success in the home raised bed.
