Palo Santo, the "Holy Wood," has been prized for centuries for its clarifying, grounding, and calming effects. When smudged, it releases a distinctively warm, slightly sweet, and balsamic fragrance that immediately creates a relaxed, cozy atmosphere in any room.

Scope of delivery: 3 sticks each

This special incense is harvested from the Palo Santo tree (Bursera graveolens), which is native to the dry forests of South America, particularly in Peru and Ecuador. Botanically, it is closely related to frankincense and myrrh. The fascinating thing about this wood is how it is formed: for traditional Palo Santo, a tree is never felled. Only when branches fall to the ground naturally and rest and age there for several years do the valuable essential oils form inside the wood, carrying that very magical scent.

Traditionally, Palo Santo is used by the indigenous peoples and shamans of the Andes for spiritual cleansing rituals. Smudging is said to drive away negative energies, clear the mind and soul, and attract deep harmony. Using it is wonderfully uncomplicated: you light one end of the wood, let the small flame burn for about 30 to 60 seconds, and then gently blow it out. The now-smoldering wood releases its clarifying smoke. You can walk through the room with it or place it in a safe spot where it will slowly extinguish on its own.

A little tip: For exactly this purpose, you can also find my matching Palo Santo burner made of Paulownia wood here in the shop. Your piece of wood can rest safely on it and, thanks to the gentle heat of a tea light, continue to smolder steadily and all by itself without you having to relight it. To the product...

It is precisely these ancient, nature-oriented rituals that fascinate me so much and make this incense wood such a valuable addition to my assortment. When I want to switch off in the evening after thoroughly watering and caring for my green favorites, there is hardly anything more beautiful than watching this warm scent rise. It instantly creates a peaceful, grounded mood – the perfect companion for your very own personal time-out in the middle of your own little urban jungle!

Palo Santo & Fair Trade: Why the origin is so important

When you buy Palo Santo, trust is everything. It is a major concern of mine that this special wood is obtained in an absolutely sustainable and ethically correct manner. That is why I source my Palo Santo under the strictest requirements:

  • State-protected in Peru
My Palo Santo comes exclusively from Peru. There, the population has been strictly controlled by the state for years. Targeted protective measures ensure that the delicate balance between careful use and the natural regrowth of these special trees is always maintained.

  • Harvesting only from naturally fallen wood
According to the strict regulations, a living tree may never be felled for my incense wood. Only branches that have fallen to the ground on their own or wood from trees that have already died naturally are collected. Furthermore, harvesting takes place only in specially designated areas whose forest stocks have been carefully examined by experts beforehand.

  • Responsibility for people and nature
Peruvian law stipulates that the wood may only be collected and cut by hand by residents of local indigenous communities. This strengthens the local economy, directly supports families on-site, and goes hand in hand with important, active reforestation projects for the Palo Santo tree.

Product Safety & Hazard Warnings:

Note: In addition to the general safety instructions, please observe the specific supplementary instructions for your purchased product (burners and incense bowls, tea light holders, or incense).

General Warnings and Safety Instructions (Fire, Heat & Location):

Never leave unattended: Never leave burning tea lights, open flames, or glowing incense unattended! Always extinguish flames and embers completely before leaving the room or going to sleep.

Fireproof & protected surface: During use, always place burners, bowls, and tea light holders on an absolutely level, stable, heat-resistant, fireproof, and moisture-resistant surface (e.g., stone, ceramic, glass, or metal).

Children and pets: Keep and operate all items (burners, tea light holders, and incense) strictly out of the reach of children and pets. There is an acute risk of burns, fire, and choking. Not a toy!

Safety distance & drafts: Maintain a distance of at least 50 cm from flammable materials (e.g., curtains, decorations, paper, furniture). Do not use in drafts (risk of flying sparks and uncontrolled flame deflection).

Risk of burns (Hot surfaces): Tea light holders, metal inserts/sieves, liquid wax, and glowing incense become extremely hot during operation. Never touch or move during use. Allow to cool completely before cleaning or emptying.

Tea light usage: Only use a single standard tea light in an intact aluminum or fireproof casing in burners and tea light holders (to prevent heat accumulation).

Specific instructions by product type:

For wooden burners: Danger of fire! The body is made of flammable natural wood. It is essential to avoid direct contact of open flames or embers with the wood. Check for cracks or severe charring before each use and do not use if damaged. Clean only when dry.

For salt crystal tea light holders: Salt crystal is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air). In high humidity, the stone may "sweat" and release salt water, which can permanently damage sensitive surfaces (e.g., wood, metal) – therefore, it is mandatory to use a coaster! Wipe dry only, never rinse with water or store in damp rooms (e.g., bathroom) or outdoors. Handle with care due to the risk of breakage and the sharp-edged crystal structure. Not suitable for consumption!

For incense (e.g., Palo Santo, woods, resins, herbs): Not suitable for consumption! Smoke is produced during smoldering: Use only in well-ventilated rooms and do not inhale rising smoke directly (smoke can also trigger sensitive smoke detectors). In case of respiratory diseases (e.g., asthma), allergies, or during pregnancy, seek medical advice beforehand. Dispose of ash and incense residues only when they have cooled down completely (risk of glowing embers!).
