Carrot `Nantaise Améliorée` - Seeds - The improved Nantaise carrot for a tasty, fresh harvest

The 'Nantaise améliorée' carrot is an outstanding, historical summer and autumn variety that represents the epitome of classic Nantes carrots. Its name translates to "improved Nantes" and refers to its origin in the Nantes region. Unlike large storage varieties, it impresses with a fine, perfectly cylindrical shape that is bluntly rounded at the bottom. It possesses an almost consistent, intensely orange-red flesh with a barely visible, equally tender core. This fine carrot is characterized by an exceptionally sweet, aromatic flavor, great crunch, and a fast development time. I selected it for my assortment because it is one of the best and most reliable varieties for direct fresh consumption and quick harvesting in one's own garden.

'Nantaise améliorée' forms medium-sized, wonderfully smooth, and cylindrical roots. For them to grow straight down into the soil and not split (forking), a sunny location with deeply loosened, fine-crumbly, and stone-free soil is absolutely essential. As a medium feeder, it does not require aggressive fertilization. Very important: Never incorporate fresh manure or immature compost directly before sowing, as this attracts carrot fly infestations and deforms the roots. Consistent watering prevents the carrots from bursting if heavy rain follows a dry spell.

This variety reaches its full maturity and best, sweetest flavor quite early, about 90 to 110 days after sowing. It can be harvested continuously from June into November through staggered follow-up sowings. It is a classic, outstanding fresh carrot that tastes best when consumed shortly after harvesting. It can be stored for a short time in damp sand in a cool place, but its absolute strength is fresh cuisine. Culinarily, it is extremely versatile; thanks to its distinct sweetness and tenderness, it is excellent for snacking raw, in fine salads, as tender glazed carrots, or for fresh juices.

This traditional, open-pollinated variety originally comes from the region around Nantes in western France. Over generations, it was specifically selected for its fine cylindrical shape, tenderness, and almost coreless, intensely sweet flesh, and to this day it remains an absolute treasure for lovers of historical vegetable varieties.
