Soapstone bowl with Christian Ichthys motif - Handmade unique pieces from Kenya

€5,80
A stylish and meaningful little place for special things. This flat, square bowl made of smoothly polished soapstone immediately catches the eye with its strong contrasts. In the center of the grey-mottled natural interior surface rests the clear, black fish symbol (Ichthys). This ancient, peaceful sign is framed by a broad, bright red border, artfully decorated with a fine, intricately interlaced light-colored ornamental pattern. Fine black lines beautifully frame the bowl.

Like all these fascinating soapstone items, this little treasure is carved, painted, and finally refined with delicate details by hand in Kenya. This elaborate and devoted craftsmanship makes every bowl an absolutely unique piece that you will love to hold in your hands.

I am always on the lookout for small, exquisite details to round off my range – and this bowl immediately won me over with its strong, positive aura. It makes a wonderful, profound gift for occasions like confirmation or communion, or simply for a loved one you wish to keep safe. But it also serves well in everyday life: on the bedside table for rings or—how could it be otherwise for me—as a beautiful, secure place to dry the fine seeds of your favorite rare plants after harvesting. A bold red accent that gives any room that certain something!

The soapstone products come from Tabaka, Kenya, a town with approx. 10,000 inhabitants located about 25 km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The color of the stones varies between white, grey, yellow, and reddish tones, sometimes streaked with beautiful veins. The raw material is mined locally in quarries. The carvers are independent artists who specialize in specific product areas. Tools used include chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The fine finishing, washing of the stone, waxing, and polishing is then usually performed by women in the family. Being 100% handmade, slight variations in shape and color are inevitable.
