This expressive sculpture captures a wonderful moment of affection: two elephants stand facing each other in familiarity, gently touching with their raised trunks. Through this elegant gesture, they together form a harmonious arch. Elephants have always been considered a symbol of wisdom, strength, and unwavering cohesion – a symbolism that this figure radiates in a touching way.

What makes this piece special is its pure naturalness. The sculpture was lovingly handcrafted in Kenya from a single piece of soapstone, so that both animals stand firmly on a shared base. Since the stone remains pure and unpainted, nature alone decides its final appearance: the earthy inherent coloring in warm beige and soft brown tones, as well as the fine, natural marbling, vary slightly with each raw stone. Precisely these wonderful whims of nature make every piece a truly unmistakable one-of-a-kind item, solely due to the individual texture of the stone! Fine, hand-carved details such as the contours of the large ears and the structure of the trunks also give the gentle giants a lifelike character.

I have included this fascinating sculpture in my shop because it brings such an incredibly grounding and peaceful calm into a room. It is a very meaningful gift for someone with whom you have a deep connection, or a strong, natural eye-catcher for your own home. As a small decorating tip: this handcrafted work of art radiates its warm appeal particularly well when placed directly next to the rich green leaves of a beautiful rare houseplant!

The soapstone products come from Tabaka, Kenya, a town with approx. 10,000 inhabitants located about 25 km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The color of the stones varies between white, gray, yellow, and reddish tones, sometimes streaked with beautiful marbling. The raw material is mined locally in quarries. The carvers are independent artists who each specialize in a specific product area. Tools used include chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The fine-tuning, washing of the stone, waxing, and polishing are then usually carried out by women in the family. The 100% hand-crafted nature of the work results in differences in shape and color.
