If you are looking for a climbing plant that grows at breathtaking speed without appearing bulky or overwhelming, you have found your perfect candidate right here. The Cypress Vine (Ipomoea quamoclit), often also called the cardinal climber, is a true gem for any garden or balcony. Unlike its well-known relatives with their large, heart-shaped leaves, this rarity captivates with incredibly fine, almost fern-like foliage and bright red, star-shaped blossoms that shine like little jewels in the sun.

Scope of delivery: 10 seeds each

Sowing at a glance

  • Preparation: It is best to soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 12 to 24 hours before sowing to soften the hard shell and accelerate germination.

  • Sowing depth: approx. 0.5 to 1 cm (cover the seeds only lightly with soil).

  • Germination temperature: Constant 20 to 25 degrees Celsius.

  • Germination period: Usually very fast, generally 1 to 2 weeks.

  • Substrate: Well-draining, standard seed-starting soil; keep evenly moist, but absolutely avoid waterlogging.

Origin and the secret of its name

The Cypress Vine originates from the tropical regions of Central and South America. There, it grows carefree to great heights along forest edges and in light thickets. The name "Cypress Vine" alludes to the finely pinnate, deeply incised foliage that, with a little imagination, resembles the soft needles of cypress trees. Its English name, "Hummingbird Vine," also reveals who its biggest fan is in its homeland. Even though we don't have hummingbirds here, its long tubular flowers make it an absolute magnet for long-tongued butterflies like the hummingbird hawk-moth!

Filigree foliage and glowing star trumpets

The absolute highlight of this climbing artist is the contrast between leaf and flower. The foliage is so deeply slit that it looks like soft, green feathering. This makes the plant appear elegant, airy, and translucent even when it grows densely.

The real spectacle starts in July: countless small, trumpet-shaped flowers emerge from the fine foliage, opening at the end into a perfect, five-pointed star. They shine in an incredibly intense, velvety cardinal red that catches the eye from afar.

Growth, height, and the perfect location

The Cypress Vine is a true sprinter and is in quite a hurry to reach upwards:

  • Growth habit and height: As a classic climber, it winds itself up everything it can grab. Within a single summer, it can effortlessly climb 2 to 3 meters (even more under ideal conditions). It absolutely requires a trellis – this can be filigree grids, taut wires, rough strings, or even an obelisk.

  • The ideal location: Since it comes from the tropics, it is a true sun-worshipper. Give it the warmest, sunniest, and most sheltered spot on your balcony or in the garden. While it will grow in partial shade, it will produce significantly fewer flowers.

  • The soil: Loose, nutrient-rich, and well-draining soil is ideal. It does not like waterlogging, but the soil should never dry out completely, especially on hot summer days.

Care and water requirements: Thirsty on hot days

Because the plant builds up an enormous amount of leaf mass in a very short time, it is very thirsty on sunny days. If it is growing in pots or balcony boxes, you will often need to reach for the watering can daily in midsummer. From the moment buds form, add a little liquid fertilizer for flowering plants to the irrigation water every two weeks – this really fuels flower production, and it will bloom tirelessly well into the golden month of October.

Winter hardiness: A brilliant feast for one summer

There is an important difference here compared to many other garden plants: Ipomoea quamoclit is not winter-hardy in our latitudes and is cultivated as an annual summer flower. As soon as the first frost hits in late autumn, the plant says goodbye.

But don't worry – propagation is child's play!

Simply leave a few of the faded flowers on the plant in the autumn. They form small seed pods. Collect the black seeds, store them in a dark and dry place, and you can grow the next generation the following spring (starting in April on the windowsill or from mid-May directly outdoors). Insider tip for sowing: If you soak the hard seeds in lukewarm water for 12 to 24 hours before planting, they will germinate rapidly!

Design ideas: Light elegance for balcony and bed

Due to its fine texture, the Cypress Vine does not overwhelm its neighbors and is excellent for a wide variety of garden ideas:

  • The airy privacy screen: Planted on a trellis on the balcony or terrace, it quickly forms a green wall that keeps prying eyes away, but still allows soft light to pass through and does not look like a massive green wall.

  • In a pot with an obelisk: A large terracotta pot with a freestanding climbing obelisk in the center will become a glowing red beacon in your garden within a few weeks thanks to this vine.

  • As a charming "overgrowth": Do you have an old, dead tree stump or an unsightly fence? Let the Cypress Vine climb up it – it transforms any "problem child" in the garden into a piece of filigree art.

Bring tropical lightness into your home! With the Cypress Vine, you are choosing a fast-growing, low-maintenance climbing artist that will enrich your summer with filigree foliage and glowing flower stars.
