If you have a penchant for exotic structural plants and tend to overwater, you will love this umbrella sedge! In stark contrast to most other plants in my range, Cyperus alternifolius subsp. textilis is a true swamp dweller, that not only tolerates waterlogging, but practically demands it. I am particularly captivated by its delicate, architectural growth form with its long, elegant stems and umbrella-like leaf clusters at the tips. As the name “textilis” already suggests, this special subspecies is traditionally used in its African homeland to make sturdy woven items and mats, thanks to its stronger stems and taller stature. Here, it is above all an absolutely low-maintenance eye-catcher for bright living spaces, while also serving as an excellent natural humidifier, or as a fantastic structural plant by a damp pond edge in summer.

Growth form, location and care This fascinating sedge grows in dense clumps and forms stiff, upright stems, which can grow 80 to 150 centimeters tall depending on the container. The location should be very bright and warm year-round, preferably with direct sunlight, provided the water supply is sufficient. Here, one absolute exception to the rule applies: The pot may and should even be placed permanently in a water-filled outer pot or saucer! Umbrella sedge does not tolerate dryness, and brown leaf tips are often an early warning sign of a root ball that is too dry or very low humidity. I recommend a nutrient-rich, humus-rich soil, which can be enriched with a little clay, to retain moisture optimally.

Winter hardiness and overwintering Umbrella sedge is of tropical origin and is not hardy at all. It is excellent as an all-year-round houseplant. If you place the plant on the balcony or by the garden pond in summer, you must bring it back indoors before the first cool autumn nights. It is best overwintered in a bright place at at least 15 degrees Celsius. The saucer should also always remain filled with water during the winter months.

Use As already mentioned, this umbrella sedge is not only a fantastic, tropical eye-catcher, but also noticeably improves the indoor climate of your home as a natural humidifier. It instantly creates an exotic atmosphere and is the absolutely perfect choice for anyone who has discovered the little watering dwarf within themselves and is looking for a plant that practically cannot be overwatered.

Origin and taxonomy Botanically, Cyperus alternifolius belongs to the sedge family (Cyperaceae). Its original home is in the swampy regions and riverbanks of Madagascar as well as southern Africa. There it grows directly in shallow water or in constantly wet riverbank mud, which tells us exactly how to make it happiest at home.
