The 'Gelbes Birnchen' tomato, often internationally known as 'Yellow Pearshaped', is a true heirloom variety and a historic eye-catcher for any vegetable garden. This open-pollinated cocktail tomato produces countless small, bright yellow fruits in a distinctive, perfect pear shape. It captivates with a very mild, fruity-sweet flavor and hardly any perceptible acidity. Due to its bite-sized shape and striking appearance, it is extremely popular with children as a snacking tomato and provides abundant yields well into autumn.

Growth habit, location and care:
The 'Gelbes Birnchen' is an extremely vigorous indeterminate tomato that can easily reach heights of 2.00 to 2.50 meters under good conditions. It requires a stable support (stake, spiral, or string) from the start. Since it is a cocktail tomato with small fruits, it does not necessarily need to be pruned to a single stem; you can easily let two or three main stems grow (though the remaining side shoots should be removed regularly), which significantly increases the yield. A full-sun, warm, and rain-protected location (greenhouse or tomato cover) is ideal to prevent late and early blight. As a classic heavy feeder, it requires deep, humus-rich soil, a generous application of compost at planting, and subsequent potassium-rich fertilizer. Water only directly at the root zone to keep the leaves dry.
Harvest and use:
The little pears are ready to harvest when they glow a rich, vibrant yellow and can be easily detached from the stem. Thanks to its sweet, low-acid flavor, the 'Gelbes Birnchen' is the perfect snacking tomato straight from the vine. Visually, it enhances any colorful summer salad, looks great in a lunchbox, or serves as a bright splash of color on cold platters. When halved and dried in the oven with a little olive oil and herbs, it also develops a fantastic aroma.
Origin:
This fascinating variety is a true piece of historical heritage. It was documented in Europe as early as the late 18th century and reached the USA shortly thereafter, where it quickly became one of the most popular home garden tomatoes from the early 19th century onwards. It has proven its worth over centuries because it is extremely robust, vigorous, and completely unmistakable in its combination of shape and color.
