The Cape Leeuwin Acacia, formerly Albizia lophantha, is an extremely fast-growing shrub or small tree from southwestern Australia. It captivates with its elegant, finely pinnate foliage. However, the absolute highlight is the dense, cylindrical flower spikes, reminiscent of bright yellow bottle brushes, emitting a delicate fragrance. A fantastic, exotic ornamental plant for the conservatory or sunny patio.

Scope of delivery: 10 seeds each

Personal experiences and successes
The Cape Leeuwin Acacia is not only botanically fascinating but also a true gardener's dream. I admire its elegant, delicate leaves again and again. Particularly noteworthy is its enormous vigor: it bloomed for me in the second year after sowing. An absolute dream! This rapid success makes it a favorite for anyone who doesn't want to wait long for exotic flowers.

Sowing at a glance

  • Preparation: Pour hot (not boiling!) water over the seeds and let them soak for 24 hours until they visibly increase in volume.

  • Sowing depth: plant approximately 1 cm deep into the substrate.

  • Germination temperature: Constant 20 to 25 degrees Celsius.

  • Germination time: Usually 1 to 3 weeks under good conditions.

  • Substrate: Use very well-draining potting soil (mixed with perlite or sand). Keep slightly moist, but never wet.

Growth habit and location
The plant needs a fully sunny, warm, and sheltered spot. The soil should be very well-draining. It tolerates drought well but absolutely cannot stand waterlogging.

Container cultivation and overwintering
Since the Cape Leeuwin Acacia is not winter-hardy and can only tolerate light frosts down to -5 degrees Celsius for a short period, it is cultivated in pots here. Water regularly in summer, ensuring no waterlogging. Overwintering must be in a bright, frost-free location at about 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. Drastically reduce watering in winter. Pruning after flowering keeps the vigorous plant beautifully compact.

Origin
It is originally native to Cape Leeuwin in the far southwest of Australia, where it preferably grows in coastal areas.
