West Indian Gherkin/ Anguria Cucumber (Cucumis anguria) - Robust African wild cucumber
Are you looking for a real exotic addition to your vegetable patch that is guaranteed to turn heads among neighbors and guests? Then make room for the West Indian gherkin (botanical name Cucumis anguria)! This curious climbing plant produces fruits that, at first glance, look like small, light-green hedgehogs or prickly chestnuts.
But don't worry: the funny "spikes" are completely soft on young fruits. Inside hides an incredibly crisp, refreshing vegetable with a subtle cucumber aroma – and it is completely free of bitter compounds!
Scope of delivery: Per young plant in a 7cm pot.
Origin & The absolute super talent: Pure resistance!
Originally, this wild cucumber species comes from Africa, but it became so popular on the Caribbean islands (the Antilles) and in South America (in Brazil it is known as Maxixe) that it received its current name there. The greatest and most ingenious advantage of the West Indian gherkin over regular slicing cucumbers: It is incredibly robust! While conventional cucumbers often struggle by late summer and fall victim to powdery mildew in droves, this original cucumber variety is bursting with health. Diseases practically bounce off it, making it the perfect, frustration-free plant for beginners and pros alike.
Growth & Location: A climbing sun-worshipper
The plant is very vigorous and quickly forms vines 2 to 3 meters long, which are covered in pretty, deeply lobed leaves.
-
Climbing is king: You can let it grow as a ground cover, but it feels most at home on a trellis, net, or fence. If allowed to climb, the little cucumber hedgehogs hang down freely, stay clean, and you can harvest them easily.
-
The perfect location: As a Caribbean exotic, it loves pure heat and sun. A sunny spot against a warm house wall, in a greenhouse, or in a large container on a south-facing balcony are ideal.
-
Care: In midsummer, it needs regular water and good, nutrient-rich soil. However, please avoid waterlogging!
Harvest tip: Size matters!
The secret to perfect enjoyment is the timing of the harvest. Make sure to harvest the fruits while they are young, when they are about the size of a walnut to a maximum of a small chicken egg (approx. 3 to 5 cm)! At this stage, the spikes are wonderfully soft, the skin is tender, and the inside is crisp, juicy, and seedless. Caution: If you leave them on the plant for too long, they will turn pale yellow, the skin will become tough, and the seeds will harden. The plant is extremely industrious at producing more – the more you harvest, the more new fruits it will form.
Into the kitchen: Snack, sauté, or pickle
Due to their firm, crisp texture and mild, slightly tangy-fresh cucumber flavor, West Indian gherkins are incredibly versatile:
-
Raw snacking: Simply wash them and pop them into your mouth whole (with the soft, prickly skin!) or slice them into a summer salad as a fun eye-catcher.
-
The ultimate cornichons: Because of their firm structure, West Indian gherkins are better suited for pickling in vinegar and herbs than almost any other variety. They stay fantastically crisp in the jar!
-
Hot as a vegetable: What sounds unusual to us is standard in South America. The little cucumbers are excellent when cooked in vegetable stir-fries, curries, or stews. They do not fall apart and absorb spices beautifully.
Bring a prickly, robust, and extremely delicious exotic into your garden with the West Indian gherkin—a plant that completely redefines the cucumber harvest!
