The Everblooming Acacia, also known in its Australian homeland as Water Wattle or Wirilda, is a fascinating, evergreen ornamental shrub or small tree. It captivates with its elegant, willow-like leaves, which botanically speaking are actually broadened leaf stalks (so-called phyllodes), and a remarkably long flowering period. The bright pale yellow, spherical inflorescences emit a wonderful fragrance and often appear several times a year under good conditions, with a strong focus from late winter to summer. As a fast-growing plant, it is a true highlight for a conservatory or sunny terrace.

Scope of delivery: 10 seeds each

Sowing at a glance

  • Preparation: To make the hard seed coat permeable, the seeds must be soaked in hot (but explicitly not boiling!) water. Then let them swell in the cooling water for about 24 hours until they have noticeably increased in volume.

  • Sowing depth: place about 0.5 to 1 cm deep into the substrate.

  • Germination temperature: Constant temperatures from 25 degrees Celsius upwards are optimal for germination.

  • Germination period: Under good conditions, the first seedlings usually appear after 3 to 4 weeks.

  • Substrate: It is essential to use a very well-draining substrate, ideally potting soil generously mixed with sand or perlite. Keep the sowing consistently slightly moist, but never wet, to avoid rot.

Growth habit and location
The Everblooming Acacia loves and needs a spot in full sun. It grows very quickly and prefers well-draining, rather sandy to stony soils. As with most Australian plants, waterlogging must be strictly avoided. Once well established, it proves to be extremely drought-resistant and resilient to heat.

Pot cultivation and overwintering
Since the plant is not reliably winter hardy and tolerates light frosts of up to about -5 degrees Celsius for a maximum of a short time, pot cultivation is the safest method for our latitudes. Use a sufficiently deep planter and a mineral-structured, loose substrate with a high proportion of lava, pumice, zeolite or coarse sand. In winter, the acacia must be overwintered in a bright, frost-free place at about 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. During this dormant phase, watering is reduced to an absolute minimum, but the substrate must not dry out completely. A light pruning after the main flowering keeps the plant compact and promotes bushy growth.

Origin and versatile use
Acacia retinoides is originally native to the southern regions of Australia and Tasmania. Interestingly, in its homeland it often grows in wetter locations, such as in depressions or along rivers. Today, it is valued worldwide for its robustness, fast growth and attractiveness as an easy-to-care-for ornamental shrub. In professional floristry, the strongly fragrant, bright yellow flowering branches are also an extremely popular and durable cut flower.
