When I discovered this gentle figure, I knew right away: it was perfect for this spot. This beautiful, stylishly abstract angel carved from soapstone radiates an incredible sense of calm and comfort.
The smoothly polished sculpture captivates with its softly flowing lines and large, protectively outstretched wings. At its center, the figure has a small, perfectly sized recess where a tealight fits securely. When you light the candle, its little flame bathes the angel’s inner curve in wonderfully warm, soothing light. Since the stone is left completely natural and unpainted, its delicate, light coloring in soft beige tones, with subtle natural inclusions, is especially beautiful. Each piece is lovingly hand-carved in Kenya, making every angel a truly unique one of a kind.
A true labor of love that I simply had to share with you! Especially during quieter moments, when you just want to unwind and relax after a day spent tending to your exotic plant treasures, this angel creates a wonderfully cozy atmosphere. It makes a thoughtful, comforting gift for someone dear—a little guardian angel for everyday life—or a peaceful, glowing guardian that looks truly magical beside the lush green of your favorite houseplants.
The soapstone products come from Tabaka, Kenya, a place with around 10,000 residents, about 25 km from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. Its color ranges from white, gray, and yellow to reddish tones, sometimes with beautiful veining. The raw material is extracted locally in quarries. The carvers are independent artists, each specializing in a particular type of product. Their tools include chisels, knives, scrapers, and sandpaper. The final sanding, washing, waxing, and polishing are usually done by women in the family. Because each piece is 100% handmade, there are variations in shape and color.
