4 Years of Pflanzenwelten: A Brief Stop in the Eternal Green
Sometimes it's worth pausing for a moment, putting down the spade, and letting your gaze wander. Today is such a day, because I'm celebrating a birthday: 4 years of Pflanzenwelten Andre Heinek!
Four years in which a deep passion has grown into a vibrant project. When you work with nature daily, the lines between hobby, calling, and philosophy blur. Pressing a seed into the earth requires trust. Seeing a strong shoot emerge weeks later is incredibly grounding. In a world that feels like it's spinning faster and faster, plants remind us of their own calm rhythm: Everything needs its time to germinate, grow, rest, and ripen.
This awareness of cycles also shapes my shop. Because I work with living nature, there are no mass-produced goods available around the clock. Everything is guided by the seasons and the frost calendar. When I wait in spring for the young plants to finally be allowed into the beds after the Ice Saints' Day, it's always a lesson in patience. Especially with tomatoes and peppers, which fascinate me with their enormous diversity – from historical varieties like the deep black 'Black Cherry' to fiery chili rarities. They always show me that waiting for the incomparable, authentic taste and vibrant colors ultimately pays off.
A garden – or even growing on the windowsill, where many people's journey might have begun with Grandma and the first white eggplant seeds from a children's magazine – is far more than just decoration. It's an active piece of nature conservation, a paradise for insects, and a daily small miracle.
Sometimes this miracle hides in tiny details, like with the Oxalis palmifrons, which unfolds a mathematically perfect rosette of leaves from an inconspicuous little bulb, resembling tiny palm fronds. A delicate work of art in a confined space. And the next moment, nature directs our gaze to the bigger picture, to the future and resilience: an American hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), for example, withstands winter cold as well as hot, dry summers. With its deeply furrowed bark and fruits that provide food for birds in the garden, it is for me a symbol of steadfastness and a true ecological powerhouse in times of change.
Ultimately, gardening is precisely about finding the balance between marveling at the small leaf and the responsibility for the large ecosystem.
