The plant loves a fully sunny, very warm, and protected location—ideally in a conservatory or at a bright south-facing window. It also enjoys spending the summer outdoors on a warm patio. The substrate should be humus-rich, loose, and well-drained. Water requirements are quite high during the growing phase, but waterlogging quickly leads to root rot. Since the Jamaica cherry is absolutely sensitive to frost, it must be overwintered indoors or in a temperate conservatory at around 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.
