The actual fruits are the many small, crunchy seeds inside the soft pulp. Another exciting fact: the 'Brogiotto Nero' is one of the self-fruiting (parthenocarpic) fig varieties. This means it produces its delicious fruits entirely without pollination by the specialized fig wasp – a huge advantage for an absolutely reliable and abundant harvest in our latitudes.

Mediterranean holiday feeling and abundant harvest

The undisputed highlight of the 'Brogiotto Nero' are its fantastic fruits. From August to September – and even into late autumn, depending on the weather – the pear-shaped, 70 to 80 gram figs ripen. Beneath the violet skin lies sweet, aromatic flesh that seduces with its honey-like taste. Whether enjoyed fresh directly from the tree, gently dried, or processed into a delicious jam, this variety is a true delight. Paired with its large, hand-shaped lobed leaves, it cuts a fine figure and immediately brings a relaxed, Mediterranean atmosphere to your garden.

Site selection and proper care

This fig feels most at home when permanently planted in the garden. As a true southerner, Ficus carica loves full sun. A very sunny and warm, wind-protected location (for example, against a heat-retaining south-facing wall) is ideal for healthy growth and essential for the sweet fruits to ripen fully. The soil should be well-drained. Keep the soil evenly moist – especially on hot summer days, this large specimen evaporates a lot of water through its leaves. However, make sure that excess water can drain well and that no waterlogging occurs, otherwise the roots will quickly rot.

Frost hardiness and safe overwintering

The 'Brogiotto Nero' is characterized by surprisingly good frost hardiness, which makes it very attractive for our climate. Planted and well-rooted specimens can tolerate temperatures of -15 to -20 °C. Even if unprotected above-ground shoots should freeze back during extreme frosts, this is usually not a problem: the roots reliably survive the winter and vigorously sprout anew in spring.

This specimen stands in a large pot outdoors with me all winter, even at temperatures below -10 °C it handles it without problems. However, I strongly recommend that you plant it permanently in the garden at its new home, because that's where it feels most comfortable and can develop optimally. After planting, light winter protection in the root area is still advisable for the first one to two years until it is properly established. It is completely normal for the fig to shed its leaves in autumn. It enters a dormant phase during the cool season and requires little light when leafless. During this time, you should significantly reduce watering to avoid root rot. Fertilizer is not necessary during the winter break.
